"The sport" is called capoeira and has a turbulent history. Capoeira has evolved in colonial Brasil in the circle of the lowest classes of people, the slaves. They trained capoeira to survive, to strenghten their bodies and prevent their spirits to crack and vanish. Slaves were taken by force from their fatherland, homes, families, children and brought into the unknown. Capoeira connected them in order to preserve their cultural heritage and chase away grief from their hearts. Practising capoeira gave them force to fight for their own freedom against slave owners. In the course of time emerged shelters called quilombos where slaves who fled joined up and lived together. After the abolition of slavery capoeira was often associated with various criminal groups and was banned for a long time.
Capoeira is a battle of two players who try to get each other out off balance or better said try to put each other in a deadlock position to make the other one think about their next move. That has nothing to do with choreography, and the battles are not planed ahead. The style of the battle depends of the rhytm that berimbau (musical instrument) plays.
I would say it is like a very lively game of twister. More I learn about it, more question marks appear over my head. I don't think that the word sport describes capoeira well. There are numerous words that can be related with it: sport, dance, acrobatics, music, tradition,... way of life. The latter is perhaps the best descripton of them all.
Anyway, I think it is worth at least to taste it. I have not met capoerista, who would not laugh, so I guess it can't harm you.
Hi,
I really like the pictures.
I'm giving a Capoeira class at my University and was wondering if I could use the first picture of the article as a preview of how good it can look :)?
Cheers,
